27 जुलाई 1939 को केंद्रीय रिजर्व पुलिस बल (सीआरपीएफ) की स्थापना हुई थी। तत्कालीन अंग्रेज शासनकाल में इसे ‘क्राउन रिप्रेजेंटेटिव पुलिस’ नाम दिया गया था। आजादी के बाद देश के पहले केंद्रीय गृह मंत्री सरदार वल्लभ भाई पटेल ने इसका नाम बदलकर केंद्रीय रिजर्व पुलिस बल (सीआरपीएफ) रखा। 28 दिसंबर 1949 को सीआरपीएफ एक्ट बनाकर नामकरण की शुरूआत की गई।
